Poland, 1938. Wiktoria (7), a sensitive child prone to sleepwalking, is sent to work as a servant in a bourgeois manor on the banks of the Vistula River. Kitty (30), the lady of the house, lives there largely in isolation with her three children and the servants.
Amid the exhausting routines of daily labor, Wiktoria uncovers a troubling world steeped in family secrets and haunted by ghostly apparitions. Despite coming from entirely different worlds, a singular and complex bond begins to form between her and Kitty.
On the eve of war, in a country on the brink of upheaval, both will be forced to trust their instincts over rigid social conventions if they are to break free from the harsh realities of their time.
